Creative Arts—Music & Drama

Music

“Oh sing to the LORD a new song;
   sing to the LORD, all the earth!
Sing to the LORD, bless his name;
   tell of his salvation from day to day.”

—Psalm 96:1–2 (ESV)

That music has always been a key component of joyful worship goes without saying, but music is also unparalleled among the creative arts in its ability to promote permanent storage and swift recall of divine truth. In fact, the 16th–Century reformer Martin Luther, himself a prolific hymn writer, is purported to have called music “portable theology.” Indeed, few tools are as effective as helps for scripture memory and doctrinal purity as a well–chosen musical repertoire.

Like any other tool, however, the wrong music can do as much harm as good. This conviction drives our strong commitment to writing, finding, using & promoting music that is doctrinally dense, biblically accurate, and God-honoring. We strongly reject the notion that music of any particular era or style should be accepted without criticism or held up as a gold standard. Because our ultimate standard is Holy Scripture, we carefully evaluate all of our music in its light, rejecting that which is corrupt and embracing that which is true.

Our instrumentation is principally a contemporary “rhythm section” band, although we are expanding to include other instruments as well. All of our music, from classical and contemporary hymns to psalms and praise ballads, are arranged to make the best possible use of our instrumentation. We know that musical preferences range widely within the church, and our ultimate goal is not to please men but to unite Christ's bride in truth. We sincerely strive to accomplish this on a weekly basis.

The best way to understand our philosophy of music is to join us in worship. When you do, leave your preconceptions at home and come prepared to allow the truths of God to move you to Spirit-filled worship.

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”

—Colossians 3:16 (ESV)

The Mustard Seed Players

We also recognize drama as a powerful and versatile tool for communicating and reinforcing truth. In December 2008, “The Mustard Seed Players” presented “What If I Believe?”, our first original contemporary musical drama. In this presentation, we challenged our community to reject “cultural christianity” and consider what it means to be a true follower of Christ.

We are committed to developing our drama team’s talents and harnessing the power of drama through skits and various outreach presentations. This year’s program, titled “Snowed In: A ‘Christmas Program’ ” was presented Saturday and Sunday, 12 & 13 December. Come back soon to read about what’s coming next!
